We spent a few days driving around the western part of Maharashtra, the large state of which Mumbai is the west-coast anchor. Our drive started in the slums of Mumbai, zipped across the modern four-lane expressway through the Western Ghats to Pune, and stretched across the high desert-like plains to Aurangabad.
